The action film is a cinematographic genre which stages a succession of spectacular scenes, often stereotypical (chases, shootings, explosions, etc.) built around a conflict resolved in a violent manner, generally by the death of the hero's enemies.
Action cinema has several sub-genres:
the detective film, like L'Arme fatale or Le Cop de Beverly Hills, whose story is based on a police intrigue and features police officers or detectives;
spy films, realistic spy films (The Spy Who Came From the Cold or The Tailor of Panama) that can be distinguished from fantasy spy films (James Bond);
the action thriller, dominated by suspense and permanent tension (Crystal trap, Speed);
the superhero film, featuring heroes endowed with supernatural powers (Superman, Spider-Man) or with ultra-sophisticated gadgets (Iron man, Batman);
the science fiction film, which can involve extraterrestrials (Independance Day), robots (Terminator) or other imaginary and extraordinary elements;
action comedy, which mixes action and comedy (The Beverly Hills Cop, Charlie and his funny ladies).
